From The Flotilla Commander:
Welcome to the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 5-11’s
website. Flotilla 5-11 was formed in 2007 in response to the
increasing needs of the boating community in Northern Manhattan. We are
part of Division 5 in the First Southern District, serving Manhattan
and the Bronx.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian volunteer
branch of the Coast Guard. We assist the Coast Guard by inspecting
recreational boats, training boaters on rules and regulations of
boating and best practices and the public on general water safety. We
are not law enforcement; for example, our vessel examinations allow the
boat owner to correct violations without legal ramifications.
Coast
Guard statistics show that our boating safety program has saved many
lives. Our mission is preventive rescue – an informed boater will be a
safer boater who may be able to avoid a mishap. Search and rescue costs
not only lives and injuries (of the rescuee and rescuer), but also has
a tremendous financial cost. A single Coast Guard search and rescue
mission can cost several hundred thousand dollars.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary please contact us. You do not need to own a boat – you only need to be willing to serve the community. To our members, we offer the opportunity to learn boating safety, marine communications and weather; to qualify for boat crew and coxswain; and in some instances, to partner with the professionals in the Coast Guard. In return we ask for some of your time and community spirit to help us inform, teach and aid the boaters in Northern Manhattan.
